Mac users have Apple Mail at their fingertips since it’s the default email client on the. If you’ve ever been browsing on a Mac and clicked a mailto: link, you may have discovered that it often tends to default to the Mail app. If you want to use Gmail (or another email service) you need to make a few changes. To be clear, the problem isn’t with opening links in another email client like Outlook or Thunderbird.

Everyone should manage their email in a desktop app, separate from whatever is going on in the random 10+ tabs you have open in your browser.
However, to date most of the Gmail desktop apps have tried to reinvent the Gmail experience and interface.

You can try this in Apple Mail:
Create a new mailbox and select the account. For the mailbox name, type Inbox/new mailbox name and then quit mail (meaning type 'Inbox/' preceding the mailbox name). Open Mail and it should create a subfolder under the inbox of the account selected. I haven't used this, so I'm not sure how well it works.

Note that when you view this at the webmail site, the sub mailbox will not appear under the Inbox. It will appear as an additional IMAP mailbox (label in gmail).
